Guidance Specialists

At HBAS we have a Guidance Specialist who serve the Adult Secondary Education (ASE) students. ASE includes the High School Diploma and High School Equivalency (GED) programs. The main roles of our Guidance Specialist is to evaluate transcripts for new students and advise in choosing the appropriate course of study.

Tammy Asaki is based at our Bolsa Campus and Melissa Alarcon is based in our BESST Center.Their ongoing services include class selection and registration, scheduling, goal monitoring, grade recording, and record keeping. Guidance Specialists also fulfill requests for student records including transcripts, GPA verifications, and proof of enrollment/attendance.

A High School Diploma is earned by completing credits in specific academic areas. The HBAS graduation requirement is 145 credits. The GED is a series of subject area tests, after passing all four subjects (Reasoning through Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math) students will earn a High School Equivalency Certificate.

How does the HS Diploma Program work?

The HBAS High School Diploma Program is a hybrid program, meaning students will complete their coursework both online and on campus. The majority of the coursework is completed online, however students who have attendance less than 7 hours a week (over 3 week average) will be placed in a tier based on their attendance.

How many hours of online attendance do I need per week?

We found that students are most successful when they spend at least 7 hours a week on their classes. Students who spend less than 7 hours over a 3 week average are encouraged to contact their teacher.

Tier System

Tier 1.) Students who spend less than 1 hour of online attendance in a week will be deactivated.

Tier 2.) Students who spend between 1 - 7 hours of online attendance need to contact their teacher for a meeting one-on-one meeting.

Tier 3.) Students who spend 7 or more hours of online attendance in a week are on track for graduation.

During this time students will have the opportunity to get one on one instruction, get feedback, take tests, and discuss their progress with their instructor.
